Izanagi. . . the creation god who traversed the land of Yomi-no-kuni to retrieve his wife, only to find her return impossible. He then betrayed his promise not to look at her, and gazed upon her rotted form. In her rage, Izanami threatened to kill one thousand of his people every day. Izanagi countered by promising to that one thousand and five hundred would be born every day.

But it wasn't until after he returned from Yomi that Izanagi decided to remove all uncleanliness from his body by bathing in the river Ahakihara in Tachibana no Ono in Tsukushi.

So maybe it's something like that?
