[It's really not uncommon at all for him to be tossed into a jail cell. It's part of the job hazard--of being a thief, that is.

If they don't try to cut off his hand, he'll be fine. If they do, he'll make a quick and hasty exit.

Simple.

So he's brushing himself off after having been rudely shoved on in there, but he recognizes pretty quickly that he's not alone in this cell.

Still, he doesn't speak until he's brushed off every speck of imaginary dust off, and then he crosses his arms behind his head and comments lazily without even looking--]

I wasn't expecting to have such nice company when I was thrown in here.

Well, I do usually work alone these days.

[And he pats Ba'ul lightly at that.]

Yes, though Ba'ul doesn't tend to get captured.

[ and that earns Matthew a croon of approval from his ride, if he can tell that much. ]

[It doesn't sound like an angry noise, so Matthew's going to take it as a positive.]

I'd imagine not. I can't really think of anything or anyone that could manage to hold him down, honestly.

Oh, it's not as though people haven't tried, and some have come close, but I don't tend to let them off very lightly.

So that must be a very unwise choice on their parts.

Well, between a dragon and a young woman, I wonder who they would have thought as more dangerous.

Either way, you couldn't call it wise.

I don't think I could say which would be more dangerous, personally. I wouldn't want to take on either.

[By the grin on his face and the distinct lack of blush, he's saying that just because it's amusing.]

It's dark enough that I'll pretend I don't see it, if that helps.

[He laughs at that, admittedly--why does she have the same sense of humor? It's amusing him terribly.]

Hm. Well, I suppose I do find you likable enough.

Well, I must be pretty lucky then. Not many people like my sense of humor.

Not many people tend to get thrown into jail, either. Or so I'd think.

More than you'd like to think, probably, but...few who aren't common thugs, I'll grant you that one.

That's right. This has only been my second time.

And what was the charge the first time?

Oh, Ba'ul and I tried to break something incredibly big and important, and the owner didn't like that.

And only you got arrested?

Seems to me that Ba'ul's got this relationship made.

Between a young woman and a giant dragon, I wonder which would be easier to capture.

Appearances can be deceiving, that's all I have to say about that. Besides, catching one and not the other is just guaranteeing that you'll escape, isn't it?

In time, yes. Ba'ul doesn't tend to interfere, since it causes more of a commotion than we'd prefer.

So...shall I take it that means you're pretty handy yourself with a lock?

Not so much. I'm just lucky in finding those people with keys.
