"Unfortunately, the real world isn't the same as a fairy tale."

"Well...that's why we're here. To make it better."

Ruby Rose is a young girl with a lot of potential.

She is exactly what you would expect from a quirky, awkward 15 year old--she's not so good at social situations, often finding crowds and parties overwhelming, and would rather wallflower than try to wade through the mire of social expectations. Making new friends is a daunting task, and in the situation she was in, Ruby was rather desperate to prove herself. After all, she was two years younger than everyone else--and two years is a lot of years to a 15 year old. A lot of years.

So Ruby would rather make weapons than make small talk. Weaponry and mechanics are one of her passions, after all, and for her, that's easy. She gets starry-eyed over other peoples' weaponry, and she calls her own weapon her baby because really? She's kind of a nerd. Okay, she's absolutely a nerd.

But awkward as she can be, she's really not so bad at people when it comes down to it. Ruby's earnest and honest, and while that can leave her making really bad impressions on people at first, it can also help her to connect with people. With Weiss, she made a rather terrible impression, admitting her own ignorance of Weiss' own family's business, but with Blake, her honest admittance that she also loves books is enough to at least start the connection. She's pretty understanding when it comes to peoples' troubles, and she's the sort of person who is happy to sit down and listen to someone's troubles, even if she can't really help much in the way of advice most of the time.

Basically, despite how awkward she can be, Ruby is an entirely steadfast friend. She cares deeply for the people she befriends, even showing a great deal of protectiveness and distress over Penny--who she had just met earlier that day--when she thought she was in danger, and later looking for her when she disappeared. But she and Penny had agreed to be friends, and therefore Penny's well-being was important to her.

Though it's true that she would be protective of just about anyone, because more than anything, Ruby wants to be a hero. She wants to protect everyone, and she wants to be a Huntress because it will allow her to do just that (and more romantically and cool, too). Her reasons for being a Huntress never waver; she is the undaunted face of team RWBY, convinced 100% that what they are doing is Good. After all, she trusts her teammates, she trusts her sister, and she trusts that so long as they're trying to protect and save people, they can't be doing anything too wrong. She's willing to do little acts of deception (if badly, honestly) if it's for the greater good, because when it comes down to it, Ruby has a very idealistic picture of how the world works. The good guys fight to make the world a better place, and the good guys win. It's a pure, innocent and somewhat childish way to look at the world, but it's what makes her such an unwavering force, and it's one of her strengths.

Because she's so purely innocent, she's an extremely accepting soul; Ruby doesn't worry about species divisions, or even the fact that one of her friends is a robot, still considering them all people. She honestly gets along extremely well with anyone who is patient with her; she and Weiss clash at first due to Ruby's childishness and desperation to prove herself, but given the time to get to know each other, their relationship smooths out. Similarly, Ruby has a very solid relationship with her sister, Yang. There's no bickering happening here; Yang is Ruby's precious family and someone who she trusts and depends on entirely (and honestly clings to a little bit in situations where she's not feeling the most confident, because her big sister is Cool). She's endearing in her own awkward way, if only because she really is that straightforward and sincere and naive.

Of course, the fact that she is that naive is also a weakness. She's easily fooled, as smart as she is, and social situations can pass right over her head. She misses a lot of the nuances of interactions as they're happening in front of her, because she's often not paying attention or is just...a little clueless. In that sense, she's a typical kid; she has a short attention span, and can easily get distracted by new and interesting things.

Really, sitting still doesn't do a single thing for Ruby (she really sucks at paying attention in class). Ruby is the exuberant sort, filled with energy, and usually smiling. She has a lot of optimism and a lot of faith that things will turn out okay, so she's really quite willing to charge right into things. She fits the quirky girl trope to a T as well, often saying whatever comes to mind, no matter how weird of a thing it is to say. She can be...so, so weird, especially considering she also has a flair for the dramatic (but in RWBY, who doesn't?). She really needs to learn how to have a brain to mouth filter.

But all of that aside, I said at the start that Ruby is a girl with a lot of potential, and that is by far her most impressive trait. Over the course of two seasons, she goes from a clueless and awkward girl to someone who takes her role as leader extremely seriously. She trusts her teammates, but she also wants to do her absolute best by them; Ruby works extremely hard to be a leader that they can trust as well, and to be there for them. She says it herself--they don't have the right to fail once they become leaders, because if they fail, they're letting their team down.

She has flashes of true leadership potential throughout the series as well. Ruby has the ability to make up plans on the fly (when she doesn't charge right in without thinking first), and she is very good at making the best use of her teammates' strengths. In that way, she's a very clever, observant girl. Understanding other people is one of her greater skills, despite her general obliviousness.

And most of all, she will never, ever give up. When the well-being of her team or the people she wants to protect is on the line, she'll give everything she has and then some to make sure that they don't fail. As far as Ruby is concerned, failure is quite simply not an option, and it never was.

Unsurprisingly for the protagonist of a series like this, Ruby's had a lot of development with her leadership potential slowly appearing, but it's still rather clear that she's only scratched the surface of her capabilities. She's still awkward, quick to stick her foot in her mouth, and a little oblivious. But she is also strong, kind and determined, and her unwavering belief is part of what makes her such a good leader, despite her age. She believes in her cause, she believes in her friends no matter who they are or what they've done, and basically, she would make for a pretty darn good shounen protagonist.

◎ Powers/Abilities:

Much like her personality, Ruby's fighting prowess is mostly potential at the moment. She is a very talented scythe user, but she's still young and hasn't been fighting as long as the others--that shows, such as when she overextends herself and stumbles or falls, or she doesn't quite gauge the situation properly.

One of her major strengths is how well she knows her weapon--as a weapon nerd, Ruby built a rather ridiculously complex weapon, but she knows every single aspect of it like the back of her hand and can use her weapon for most anything.

As Ruby's semblance is speed, her fighting style unsurprisingly revolves around being quick and hard to hit. She makes use of the recoil from her weapon to keep moving, and uses that to add further strength and force to her strikes. Said semblance allows her to move from place to place so quickly she is unable to be seen--but she uses it infrequently and sometimes goes so quickly that she unbalances herself, so she's still a little unpracticed.

Of course, she's still a girl at one of the top fighting academies of her world, so she's still a very talented fighter--so long as she has Crescent Rose with her.

This is also incredibly thorough, if you'd like an even greater breakdown.
