SenBASA @ Wikipedia
CANON POINT: Post Red Route
APPEARANCE: Here!
PERSONALITY:
The first thing that stands out to anyone meeting Mitsunari is that he more or less embodies the trait of loyalty. For Mitsunari, picked up and taken under Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s wing, there is nothing more important than serving the Toyotomi with all of his being, and that’s not an exaggeration. If Hideyoshi orders it, it will be done. It doesn’t matter what it takes, and really, to give anything less than his everything to the Toyotomi is unacceptable to him—in himself and in others. He certainly has no issues with snapping at others for wasting time, wasting effort, wasted things that would have been better put towards serving the Toyotomi properly.
That was his entire life—well, until Ieyasu killed Hideyoshi.
The most important thing in Mitsunari’s life is loyalty—then it serves to reason that his most hated thing is betrayal, and that is certainly the truth. Betrayal is something hated, unforgivable and utterly wrong; he hates it with all of his being. Ieyasu not only killed his lord, he betrayed the Toyotomi entire, so it is really no wonder that Mitsunari hates him so fervently and furiously.
Following all of that, Mitsunari is an extremely straightforward person. There’s very little that isn’t obvious about him from first meeting; he isn’t the sort to hide things or pretend to be something he isn’t. In fact, he’s almost painfully honest at all times. Lying is something detestable and unacceptable, and he will never indulge in something as sinful as that. It would be hard to meet someone more honest than him, in fact. If he says he will do something, he will do it. This is a man who would not just never stab someone in the back, the very thought would never cross his mind. He’s a man of extremes as well—he takes responsibility for his subordinates’ misdeeds and even goes so far as to offer his own life in payment for their disgusting deeds of betrayal in one route.
Because betrayal is detestable in all ways, and for it to happen under his own banner is something he could not allow to go unaddressed; he would take responsibility for it, and to him betrayal must be paid for with repenting and death. In that sense, his actions are all very logical according to his own moral code.
Because he really is that stubborn. In an era distinguished by bushido ways of thought, when the man Mitsunari has dedicated his life to is killed, suicide is simply not an option. Giving up on life like that is pathetic to him—so he finds another purpose, namely revenge on Ieyasu (in Hideyoshi’s name, of course; how else could he continue to function?). As Yoshitsugu puts it, “It is useless to try to make us retreat. Mitsunari will never retreat.” He will not retreat, he will not back down and he will not forgive that which he considers unforgivable. And so, as broken and shattered he is after Hideyoshi’s death, he can carry on so long as he finds a purpose to devote himself to, one entirely for Hideyoshi.
…But because of all of this, he is not very easy to get along with—or to like. He is the most dependable of allies in pure trustworthiness—but he is also bitter, temperamental and uncaring. He has a terrible temper, lashing out in words (and occasionally in actions) when upset. It doesn’t take much to set him off, either. Threats flow easily off of his tongue, inventive and dark, and he sees no issue with threatening an ally with his sword if need-be. Because after Ieyasu’s actions, he’s paranoid as well; his fellow general betrayed him, and so he is suspicious and afraid that his new allies will do the same. His paranoia, as is the Mitsunari way, manifests in anger and threats as well. He probably doesn’t hate you. Really.
And yet he is capable of being reasonable. He is suspicious and frustrated—but he accepts his new allies nonetheless (though certainly his advisor Yoshitsugu’s advice helps there). And he accepts them into his ranks fully, to the point that he is rather upset when his ally, Motochika Chosokabe, is attacked by another. Because Motochika is his ally, and while that means he expects Motochika’s loyalty, Motochika received Mitsunari’s as well. It’s just a given. That’s the sort of man he is. When someone has earned his loyalty, they will have it, unflinchingly.
Of course, Mitsunari is more than he loyalty as well. With his temper and his bluntness, it’s very easy for him to offend people—not that he cares if he does. Because in general, “other people” don’t matter to him. It is for this reason that he so easily brushes off insults to himself--the opinions of others truly don't matter to him, so long as they are speaking in reference to Mitsunari. Of course, the moment someone insults Hideyoshi, that is a different matter entirely and he will quite literally be out for their blood...but as for his own self, it doesn't matter what the world thinks of Mitsunari the Dark King.
And with this utter disregard for other's opinions comes a certain understanding of how Mitsunari acts. He's childish, quite frankly. When he is upset he throws temper tantrums, lashing out and overly reacting extremely poorly. He can easily be provoked through the use of the Toyotomi name, and his temper can be set off very easily.
And on top of all of that, he's a little...unhinged. By a little, of course, I mean extremely unhinged, rather off the deep end by now, if the way he can laugh maniacally while killing others can be believed. He lives for a purpose--that purpose was Hideyoshi, until Ieyasu killed him. When Ieyasu killed Hideyoshi he shattered Mitsunari's life and purpose; while the samurai was able to pick himself up, it was only because he had something else to dedicate his life to, namely chasing Ieyasu down for revenge (in Hideyoshi's name, of course). But by the end of his red route, Mitsunari has killed Ieyasu as well, at which point he quite thoroughly snaps, realizing he killed his only purpose for living at that point and declaring his own sins. In the end, his own honesty came to break him down further; how else was he to feel knowing that he had lived in a delusion?
In the end, Mitsunari is, at his core, unchanging and unbending. He would sooner snap in half than compromise his core values--his loyalty, his honesty, and his purpose for his life, the Toyotomi. So while he is combative and temperamental, childishly throwing temper tantrums and screaming his displeasure at times, he is also a very steadfast and loyal ally, and it's truly no wonder so many people stand by him by the end of the his route in the game.
ABILITIES: Mitsunari is a samurai, and his greatest assets are his speed and ability with his sword. While his speed and abilities will be toned down from SenBASA ridiculous to human for Caligo, he definitely has been using a sword for a very, very long time and it shows. He fights in the iaidou style, aka by sheathing his sword in between each and every attack. It takes a good deal of speed and discipline to fight in this style.
Otherwise, he has led an army, but he's notably not really the best at it (and Yoshitsugu helps). Still, he is competent with logistics and other such things.
Historically, he was supposedly good with numbers too, but we all know how SenBASA treats history. Still, it's something worth noting.
And he's excellent at detailed and creative death threats
POSSESSIONS: …Nothing but the clothes on his back, whoops. Even Yoshitsugu comments on it, stating that Mitsunari doesn't own anything for himself--after all, everything he has is given and dedicated to his lords.
>PERSONA
MAJOR ARCANA:
The Moon; Mitsunari is the first (and only, perhaps) character to "see through" Ieyasu's pretty words and speeches and spy the ambition hiding there. While he may very well have been delusional, he is generally very good at seeing straight through flattery and other such things--after all, they mean nothing to him. Of course, there is the madness route, something that influences him thoroughly by this stage. And it doesn't hurt that his motif in the game is the moon.
The Emperor; A good portion of the third game is certainly Mitsunari shouldering responsibilities. He is also loyal and steadfast, very nearly stiff in his single-mindedness.
The Tower; The Tower symbolises all of the change that Mitsunari is being forced through; keywords such as "Disruption. Conflict. Change. Sudden violent loss. Overthrow of an existing way of life" certainly describe his life, and though he does reach an enlightenment at the end, he doesn't reach any sort of peace.
SHADOW: Mitsunari's shadow would be a reflection of himself entirely, focusing on his failures and his "sins"--his sins of killing Ieyasu, the overall pointlessness of the act and the way it broke him afterward. The focus would be on how he is little better than Ieyasu, in fact; Ieyasu is a treacherous killer, but Mitsunari betrayed the Toyotomi in being so wrapped up in his own revenge and being incapable of properly succeeding his lord (which is something he addresses in his blue route, though he has not here).
His dungeon would be very plain and straightforward--simply a very large, flat stage that would be a recreation of Sekigahara. There is the sound of armies clashing, but no actual soldiers, only shadows.
PERSONA: As most Japanese legends have been thoroughly sifted through for Persona, Mitsunari’s Persona will be Máni from Norse Mythology. He’s the deity of the moon in said mythology, keeping count of time and has a sister that is the Sun; he is also doomed to being chased down and eaten by wolves which sounds a whole lot like Mitsunari’s life. Mitsunari and moon imagery are also ridiculously tied together in the game, so it seemed fitting.
Máni often takes the form of a “man in the moon”-esque form. For the sake of his Persona, he will resemble the horse and chariot image which is fitting considering one of the mid-bosses of Mitsunari's stage is just that.
His skill set will be as follows:
Cleave | Inflicts a small amount of Physical damage on one enemy. | 5% HP | INNATE
Mudo | 25% chance of instant death from the power of Darkness on one enemy.| 8 SP | INNATE
Armchopper | Inflicts a small amount of Physical damage twice with a chance of Fear on one enemy. | 9% HP | LVL 10
Rampage | Inflicts a small amount of Physical damage up to three times on all enemies. | 12% HP | LVL 15
Kill Rush | Inflicts a small amount of Physical damage up to three times on one enemy. | 10% HP | LVL 20
Apt Pupil | Doubles the chance of delivering a Critical Hit. | LVL 21
Mamudoon | 40% chance of instant death from the power of Darkness on all enemies. | 34 SP | LVL 33
Cruel Attack | Inflicts a moderate amount of Physical damage on one enemy with even greater power on Downed enemies. | 12% HP | LVL 41
Power Charge | The next normal attack, physical skill, or Almighty physical attack will be 2.5 times greater in power. Self. | 15 SP | LVL 47
Heaven’s Blade | Inflicts a large amount of Physical damage on one enemy. | 19% HP | LVL 55
Deathbound | Inflicts a large amount of Physical damage on all enemies. | 20% HP | LVL 67
Die For Me! | Very high chance of instant death from the power of Darkness on all enemies. | 44 SP | LVL 73
Unshaken Will | Becomes immune to all mental ailments. | -- | LVL 85
Pralaya | Inflicts a severe amount of Physical damage with a high chance of instant death on all enemies. | 25% HP | LVL 93
PERSONA ACQUISTION: Mitsunari's honesty means he'd be one to almost too easily accept most if not all of the things his shadow would have to say about him, without hesitation. He's honest to himself, just as he is to everyone else, and he is the first to call himself a sinner for all he had done when he reaches the end of his route.
So if possible he will be receiving his Persona from the gas station attendant. Because really. The poor guy is already broken enough.
>SAMPLES
FIRST PERSON ACTION, JOURNAL, OR PHONE SAMPLE: A link to a sample can be found here, following the prompt on the Test Drive meme of: You wake up on a mysterious train, and so has the person right next to you. You have no idea what train this is, where it's headed, or how you came to be there, and it seems like neither does your new friend. Why not chat about it?. Unfortunately I managed to screw up my icons since then. I'm very sorry about that! And Here at the test drive meme!
THIRD PERSON SAMPLE: For Ishida Mitsunari, adapting to modern day Japan was not an easy process, made all the more difficult by the circumstances surrounding his arrival. He could stumble through life on the day to day, certainly, and so he did--but he did not enjoy it and it disgusted himself to see. He had always despised Oichi for just that reason, clinging weakly to life but not doing anything with it...it truly was disgusting. And now he was living in the same pitiful manner as she.
But it was easy to condemn oneself and not so easy to pick up the shattered pieces of his life. He adapted slowly, having no desire to grow accustomed to a world that he had no attachment to, and not caring in the least what those around the town thought of him in his oddity. Why should he care what a pitiful group of rabble thought?
He persisted because death was too simple--he had not earned his death. He owed it to his Lord Hideyoshi to repent...to repent for his sins, his failures, his paltry victories. Until he had repented properly, until he had found a purpose, or until he had earned his death, he would survive.
It was not easy, adapting to modern Inaba, shattered and aimless and purposeless. But Ishida Mitsunari had never truly taken the easy path. And he would not start now.
And so, face turned to the darkened sky, Mitsunari frowned and murmured quietly, "Give me the strength to face this challenge, Hideyoshi-sama."
But he had it. He would show everyone the strength that his lord had entrusted in him. Because he could not fail the Toyotomi again.
